Description:
Caberlin is a medication that contains cabergoline, which belongs to a class of drugs called dopamine agonists. It is used to treat conditions that are related to high levels of the hormone prolactin. Elevated prolactin levels can cause issues like galactorrhea (abnormal milk production), amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), and infertility in women, as well as low testosterone and sexual dysfunction in men.
Uses:
-
Hyperprolactinemia: Caberlin is primarily used to treat hyperprolactinemia (high levels of prolactin). This condition can be caused by prolactin-secreting tumors in the pituitary gland (prolactinomas).
-
Infertility: In women with high prolactin levels, Caberlin can restore normal menstrual cycles and help with fertility. It is also used to correct anovulation (lack of ovulation) in women with prolactin abnormalities.
-
Suppression of Lactation: Caberlin can be used to suppress lactation in cases where breastfeeding is not possible or necessary, such as in cases of unwanted milk production after childbirth or in women who are not breastfeeding.
-
Treatment of Pituitary Tumors: In cases of prolactin-secreting pituitary tumors, Caberlin helps to reduce prolactin secretion and shrink the size of the tumor, improving symptoms.
Dosage and Administration:
-
Standard Dosage:
-
The usual starting dose for hyperprolactinemia is 0.25 mg twice a week, which can be gradually increased based on your doctor’s recommendations.
-
The dose is typically increased to 0.5 mg twice a week, and in some cases, up to 1 mg per week (divided into two doses).
-
-
Administration:
-
The tablet should be taken orally, preferably with food, to reduce stomach upset.
-
It is recommended to start with the lowest possible dose and gradually increase to avoid side effects.
-
-
Adjustments:
-
Dose adjustments are made depending on the prolactin levels and the individual’s response to the treatment.
-
Caberlin is usually taken twice a week, but your doctor will provide a specific schedule based on your needs.
-
